MICHIKO KAMEI: After working as an industrial designer, Michiyo Kamei was searching for a new way to express herself when, at an antique market, she came across Ise-katagami (paper pattern), used in the dyeing of fabric for kimonos among other things. She became interested in traditional patterns and washi (Japanese paper), coming up with her own technique, which she began using around 2013. The technique, which she calls "chou-hashi (carving and pasting paper)," is not limited to the so-called "kirigami (paper cutout)," but incorporates free ideas. She believes that the traditional patterns of Japanese plants, animals, and natural phenomena have meaning, and by using these patterns and Japanese paper in her designs, she is trying to fuse the good of the past with the present.
