Nawal El Moutawakel ( born 1 May 1962) is a Moroccan former hurdler and the first female Muslim and African to win an Olympic gold medal. She won the 400 meters hurdles at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, becoming the first woman from a Muslim-majority country to win an Olympic gold medal. She was also the first female Moroccan athlete to win an Olympic medal. El Moutawakel was appointed Minister of Sports in Morocco in 2007. She was a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1998 to 2018.
