The Ballet, 2022

Natalia Oginskaya | Stand : W14

This mosaic artwork is a homage to Nikolay Sapunov’s work ‘Ballet’ (1906). It is made in microtechnique (the size of the tesserae is 1-3 mm) to underline the elegance, finesse and beauty of the ballet dancers and the stage itself. I used the wide blackboard as a base for the mosaic to give a feeling that you are the viewer, sitting in the theatre’s darkness and watching this ballet scene. In this work, I used mother of pearl and more than 30 kinds of natural stones: beryl, smoky quartz, rhodonite, nephritis, aquamarine, agate, apatite, labrador, citrine, fuchsite, ulexite, obsidian, sunstone, charoite, chrysoprase, tourmaline, coral, tourmalinated quartz, lepidolite, crimson quartz, jasper, etc. The variety of materials, the microtechnique, and the method I used to place tesserae together all allow the colours to have a soft and magical effect of the ballet act. With another work of mine, ‘The Waltz’, from the artwork series - ‘Dream of Dancing.’
