Basketball, 2022

Natalia Oginskaya | Stand : W14

This artwork invites you to think about light and shadows in your life. According to Carl Yung, we all have a shadow side. That is where we can learn a lot about our desires and fears. However, once you step into your shadow (and that is often scary as you will see less shiny sides of yourself), you will find your strength and lots of energy. At the beginning of my basketball-playing journey, I took a photo of myself at the playground I trained. I had a lot of doubts and insecurities about whether I should start this highly challenging sport at forty. That photo and my experience became the base for my work. Inspired by the impressionists, I used different colours (dark green, purple and dark blue) but black to make the shadow. I used a modern mosaic technique: tesseraes are knocking together by their corners, ready for an action - a representation of this active game. For this piece I used smalti and stained glass. This work was chosen for the group exhibition “Art and Sport”, Omelchenko Gallery, Moscow, Dec.2022-Feb.2023
